Philanthropist and Chairman of The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion Ian Green, is set to visit Lumbini in the first week of April. Ian, who played a key role in constructing one of the world’s largest Buddhist stupas in Bendigo, Australia, has stated that he is visiting Lumbini to promote Buddhist teachings and strengthen Nepal’s religious and cultural ties.
In recognition of his significant contributions to Buddhism and secular harmony, Ian Green has been honored with the Order of Australia Medal. Facilitator and activist Dan Ghising stated that Ian’s visit emphasizes establishing a new era of religious cooperation between Nepal and Australia.
According to activist Ghising, The Great Stupa features the world’s largest Buddhist statue, crafted from high-quality jade, attracting international attention. The primary objectives of The Great Stupa include showcasing Nepal’s artistic and cultural heritage, supporting Nepal’s artistic legacy, and raising awareness about climate change and environmental sustainability.
Ghising highlighted that mutual cooperation and collaboration would significantly contribute to promoting Nepal’s tourism industry. He added that Ian Green’s visit to Lumbini is expected to deepen the Buddhist connection between Nepal and Australia.
To make Ian Green’s visit to Lumbini meaningful, special recognition and formal programs have been arranged at the local level. Coordinator Tulsi Ram Lamichhane has stated that Lumbini Cultural Municipality (Rupandehi), Kapilvastu Municipality (Kapilvastu), Devdaha Municipality (Rupandehi), Ramgram Municipality (Nawalparasi), and Tilottama Municipality (Rupandehi) have planned various events as part of the Lumbini Circuit. The key objectives of the visit include observing Buddha’s birthplace in Lumbini, interacting with prominent Buddhist gurus, inspecting Buddhist heritage conservation and development projects, and attending formal programs.
Coordinator Lamichhane expressed optimism that Ian Green’s visit would open new avenues for religious and cultural collaboration between Nepal and Australia, further elevating the level of cultural and religious cooperation.
